Fierce
Allison Miller's composition, "Fierce" appears on her album Rivers In Our Veins, a project embracing the concept of flow and renewal, and dedicated to our nation’s crucial rivers, watersheds, and the organizations devoted to reviving and protecting them. Arranged here for large jazz ensemble by Noriko Ueda, "Fierce" is a ruckus ode to the resilience of the people who’ve moved along the waterways over the centuries.
The piece oscillates between half-time funk with a strong back beat and a one drop reggae groove. The underground, gritty lines in low-pitched instruments are juxtaposed with syncopated, lighter melodies throughout, just as 4/4 time is juxtaposed against a slightly more angular 6/4. There are solo opportunities for baritone sax, trombone, and a unique open drum solo to dynamically end the piece.
We encourage all musicians who rehearse and perform "Fierce" to bring a level fearlessness and ferocity to their performance.
