Summer Vibes

Living up to its title, Erica von Kleist's "Summer Vibes" is effortlessly cool. With a "sneaky" swing groove and a minor-key melody, this middle school-level Flex Chart offers an easy, adaptable tune for jazz bands of almost any instrumentation.

The time feel starts with the piece's signature “sneaky”, cool swing groove through A and B, and then opens up to straight ahead swing, offering the drummer some choices to experiment a bit. The dynamics of the piece help to create suspense and interest and, an open solo section hovering over F minor provides a great opportunity for anyone in the ensemble to improvise.

Depending on the orchestration available in your ensemble, students can read either the C, Bb, Eb or Bass Clef parts. Composer Erica von Kleist designed the piece in this way to provide a fun, full-sounding chart that most bands can enjoy playing. Each part splits into harmonies, which helps create a big band-like sound without the need for a large ensemble. If your group features several of the same instrument, the melodies and harmonies can still be evenly distributed.

Included: PDF digital downloads of full transposed score, all parts, and reference mp3.
